Bungie has said it is "absolutely not done with Destiny" just months after the controversial decision to end ongoing support for Destiny 2.

The five-minute upload features Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and head of product, GM of Marathon Josh Deane. The two executives start their surprise talk with fans, promising that Sony has not completely abandoned the Destiny brand after months of fans pleading to see them either return to Destiny 2 or eventually create Destiny 3.

"We're not asking for your trust," Torkan said, acknowledging some of Bungie's recent struggles. "We know we have to earn it, and to do that, we need our games to deliver in ways that exceed your expectations of what you've come to love about the games that we make – and that starts with Destiny.

"Bungie wouldn't be what it is today without it. It's the foundation upon which everything else rests, and we are absolutely not done with Destiny. We have more stories to tell, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe."

Deane clarified that Bungie's goal is to "return Destiny to its original promise." That means going back to "awe-inspiring mystery, the sense of discovery, and the promise of a community of Guardians rallying together, raging against impossible odds."

It's been a painful few months for the players who stuck by Destiny and Destiny 2 before substantial support came to an end with the Monument of Triumph update in June. Unfortunately, restoring that community and rebuilding trust will take even more time.

"I wish we could just flip a freaking switch, but we're going to commit to unvaulting the Destiny 2 campaigns, the destinations, the raids that never should have been ripped away to begin with," Deane added. "They were an essential part of our journey together and definitely a place where we built memories with y'all."

Bungie shared additional details with a post on its website. In a segment titled "Destiny Is Foundational to Our Future," the team excplitly called attention to the players who rallied together to give Destiny another shot at life. Through all of the uncertainty, comments, and livestream chat takeovers, it seems those in charge heard fans loud and clear.

"Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact," the message said. "You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you."

As teased in the video, the first step to a future with more Destiny stories means unvaulting experiences that were previously locked away. The studio acknowledged that the vaulting certain experiences "had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny," adding that "Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself."

"It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history."

Bungie said it is just getting started on the work required to unvault campaigns, destinations, and raids. All of this content will be made available for "all Destiny 2 players," though the developers caution that "bringing back this content is not as simple as restoring old files."

Changes made post-Beyond Light will require the studio to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and more. It's work that will take time, but the fact the effort is being put in at all is something that will no doubt have fans waiting on the edges of their seats, no matter how long it takes.

"When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve," the message continued. "We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can."

So, what exactly does this mean? While fans may not want to get their hopes up that this video serves as confirmation of Destiny 3 quite yet, Deane did say the plan is to deliver "new Destiny stories and games" that players deserve. In other words, the promise of more Destiny, a day many thought may never come, is here.
