I’m a little basic. My favorite Marvel superhero? Spider-Man. My favorite DC hero? Batman. I can’t help it, but the Caped Crusader’s dark aesthetic, combat prowess, detective skills, and lack of superpowers (besides being rich) make him a global phenomenon for all the right reasons. The Batman Arkham series may be the defining adaptation of the character, and if you want to play it from start to finish, it’s never been cheaper. So, make like a bat and grab the chance.

I’ve been enjoying the best Batman games for almost two decades at this point. From when I was a bright nine-year-old who unwrapped Arkham Asylum on my birthday to now being old and frail at the age of 26, still playing Arkham Asylum. Life is a circle, and that’s not a joke(r). Even now, I still regularly play through the series, although I still think Knight is the best one. Fight me.

The creepy, constricted halls of Arkham Asylum put a focus on Batman’s combat as he tries to stop, you guessed it, the Joker. While future entries nailed more of the Caped Crusader’s arsenal, Asylum is drenched in atmosphere and tension, with the gothic architecture of the prison making the entire experience less like gliding through Gotham and more like a horror game. As much as I prefer the later games, well, Asylum might be the most impressive from a design perspective.

Arkham City remains a highlight of the series, delivering a more open-world experience that sees you fight around a large, city-sized prison. Yes, Batman is back in jail, but not because he broke any crimes. This time, Batman’s gallery of villains offers everything from Mr. Freeze to Ra’s al Ghul, and from Two-Face to Hugo Strange. City is where Rocksteady showcased its narrative strength, leading into the finale… kinda.

If Asylum perfected atmosphere, and City perfected the story, Knight perfected the gameplay. Playing as Batman makes you feel— I’m not doing that joke. Arkham Knight’s electrifying combat sees Bruce Wayne’s alter ego dive around arenas, punching bad guys with a slickness that is genuinely cathartic. And while the forced Batmobile sections can be somewhat tedious, driving around Gotham City in a tank with the speed of a Lamborghini Revuelto SV is stupidly fun. Imagine one of those cars coming at you, but it’s armed to the teeth with armor and what amounts to a giant tranquilizer cannon. Yeah, it’s badass.

Also, don’t sleep on Arkham Origins. It’s not as good as the Rocksteady trilogy, but it’s a great prequel, with solid combat and a good story. If you want to play the entire series (except Shadow, which remains one of the best VR games if you manage to buy a Quest), you can get all of these games for less than they’ve ever cost on Steam at Fanatical. That also includes all DLC for Knight, City, and Asylum, giving you enough content to last for hours. Origins, admittedly, isn’t at its lowest price. But you’re already buying all of them, so you may as well get the entire collection.

Sadly, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn’t on sale right now, so you might need to skip that one. Well, to be honest, you’re probably better off skipping it anyway.
