Call of Duty's latest "From The Ward" video gives players a behind-the-scenes look at how Infinity Ward crafted the weapons for Modern Warfare 4, and some players are already worried about the game's visual recoil and effects.
During this documentary, the developer shows off the live-firing of weapons in order to craft authentic guns for Modern Warfare 4. Several members of the development team went to a firing range in order to get the feel of various weapons replicated in the game.
Co-studio head Mark Grigsby explains the studio's philosophy on weapons by saying, "In the game, every time you pull the trigger, make it feel like the weapons that are in real life."
The premise of wanting the player to feel like they're really behind their operator's gun sounds great on paper, but the gameplay snippets given in the video show some guns produce heavy visual recoil and smoke, which was also a major complaint during Infinity Ward's latest effort with 2022's Modern Warfare 2.
Infinity Ward does show off the game's new VFX masking, which allows the player to have a clear visual on their target while still providing the recoil and smoke, but some players aren't sold on the effects. The comments on this episode show many players still aren't interested in this level of realism in Call of Duty.
One commenter said, "You can barely see anything when firing weapons."
Another person did praise the movement and graphics of the game for looking great, but they highlighted the gun's visual "clutter" and screen shake. "Thereโs just no reason for visual recoil and all the smoke," they said.
The negative feedback was loud enough to earn a response from Infinity Ward. The studio said, "We've seen the early conversations around visual recoil. The beta will give players a chance to get hands-on, and we'll be monitoring feedback closely throughout both weekends."
Of course, it's too early to truly know how the guns will feel in Modern Warfare 4 until going hands-on and adjusting the settings to your personal preferences.
Modern Warfare 4 is currently available for the public to play at the Fanatics Fest event that takes place this weekend in New York City. We still don't have specific dates for the beta, but an open beta is confirmed to take place sometime before launch, and preordering the game gets you in early.
Activision recently revealed a closer look at Modern Warfare 4's upcoming Kill Block, which is a constantly changing multiplayer map with swappable map pieces. Kill Block will have up to 500 different potential map combinations at launch.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
