Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is a sprawling tale composed of four different interconnected heroes, each with their own story campaign. These can be played in any order, and the choice might seem daunting. Which hero is the best to start your journey with? After a brief prologue, you're taken to the Obelisk Chamber, where you'll see the obelisks to the four Flame Lords. Those are your passageways into their individual stories. What sets the Flame Lords apart are their special questlines, their Blaze Arts, and their surrounding cast. While you have a great deal of flexibility in recruiting new soldiers to your side and steering your party members in any direction, they are mostly built to excel at particular class types and that will define the type of parties you build with each.

The Starter Option: Cai

You can think of Cai as the starter character. His special quests grant renown a little more quickly than the others, and so he has an easier time recruiting party members. His Blaze Art is one of the most powerful, an area-of-effect attack that can hit multiple enemies at once, which is a rarity in Fortune's Weave. And his map is more restricted than any of the other Flame Lords, letting you get a feel for how map exploration works without it becoming too dauntingly large and complex.

Cai's story is similarly made to ease you into the world. Cai is just a kid, so he's not involved in the complex politics of Dagda and the surrounding regions. His goal in the Heroic Games is to free his father, who has been falsely imprisoned. So during his path you'll meet other characters and get a general sense of the sequence of events during the Heroic Games, but it's all very digestible.

Thus, both from a mechanical and story perspective, choose Cai if you want to ease into Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave.

For Combat Lovers: Dietrich

Dietrich is a bit more complex, and aimed at getting in reps with the combat system. His special quest is all about finding formidable opponents to fight, which means you can gain lots of combat experience (and valuable experience points) while also getting renown for recruitment. His Blaze Art emphasizes movement and positioning, allowing him to close gaps quickly on an opponent. He can also learn a wide variety of Combat Arts, giving him a ton of combat versatility. And his map opens up fully to let him find faraway opponents to fight, so it will feel like an expansion if you played Cai's story first. He can also summon enemies to fight close to his current location, so you're never far from a battle with Dietrich.

Dietrich's story is also relatively simple. His sword needs blood, so he needs strong opponents and monsters to fight to feed it. There are pieces of political intrigue in his story, as in all the Flame Lords stories, but his personal motivation is plainly just to fight the biggest, baddest people around.

That makes Dietrich ideal for those who love Fire Emblem combat, or who want to get lots of combat reps in.

Best For Vets: Theodora

Theodora is the most complex of the combat-focused characters. Her special quest involves scouring the world for supplies to send back home in order to gain renown, so you'll need to do a lot of map exploration and more careful time management to boost your numbers. She also has exclusive access to Gambits, which allows you to assign squadrons of fighters to specific types of units. You can also send recruits out on scouting missions for supplies. Her Blaze Art is straightforward by comparison--she just grabs a gigantic chunk of rock and chucks it across the battlefield, giving her unparalleled attack range. That's partly because, broadly speaking, Theodora and her companions lean the most toward tank-focus, making for slower movement across the battlefield.

Theodora's story is also among the most complex. As a queen of a neighboring nation, she has the most personal stake in the political machinations of Dagsion, and her story includes lots of proper nouns and discussions of past conflicts.

All of this means Theodora is best for Fire Emblem veterans, or those who just want to jump in with both feet.

For Support Players: Leda

Finally, Leda is a very different type of character, with an emphasis on support. Her Blaze Arts are a series of dances that grant passive benefits to allies, and her retinue of surrounding cast members are more slanted toward spell-slingers than regular combat units. Her special quest involves traveling the world to perform at different taverns, so you'll need to uncover a lot of the map to find your way to all of the locations. She can also get insider tips on secret spots of the map that only she can access.

Leda saw her father slaughtered in front of her and made it her life's mission to find the man who killed him and exact revenge. Her story is therefore extremely personal, and while she witnesses some of the political intrigue in and around Dagsion, she doesn't really care about it beyond how it impacts her quest for vengeance. She practically floats outside of the main events of the story because she's so single-minded to her goal.

Leda is best if you want to play support and experience a more personal story.

So in broad terms, the characters are essentially ordered left-to-right to give you a smooth path through the game, if you take them in that order: Cai to ease you into the world and mechanics, Dietrich to get a lot of combat experience, Theodora to build on the others' combat and story complexity, and Leda to round it out with support and a more personal story.

However, all of the paths start on the easier side and slowly ramp up, so you won't feel too overwhelmed taking on any of them first. You should pick whichever Flame Lord interests you the most. And you can always switch to a different Flame Lord at almost any point, so there's no reason you can't hop around or even play their chapters one at a time for each.
