Gears of War: E-Day is Microsoft’s major Xbox exclusive for the coming holiday season. It’s a prequel to the gritty chainsaw-slinging series that helped make the Xbox 360 the best console of its generation. To go along with E-Day in the Xbox Series X|S era, Microsoft is releasing a limited-edition Gears of War: E-Day-themed wireless controller. It costs $89.99 is set to release on September 30. Preorders are live now at Amazon and all the other major retailers.

E-Day in the Gears universe stands for “Emergence Day.” That’s the day when the Locust Horde emerged from underground on the planet Sera and attacked humanity, setting off the titular conflict in Gears of War. That’s what the upcoming game will cover, and that’s what this controller’s design reflects.
The controller is black, with a gaping red hole opening on its faceplate, the cracks of which spread down the grips. It’s a bold design, complete with “3D molded, laser-etched details,” meaning you can actually feel the cracks. The series’ iconic skull image, the Crimson Omen, is emblazoned in the center of the red hole. Both triggers are made of transparent red plastic, and all of the face buttons (save for the Xbox button) are unlabeled, which is pretty cool.

In addition to the controller, you can also preorder an officially licensed Gears of War: E-Day-themed controller dock from 8BitDo. It has the name of the game on it, plus red cracks that line up nicely with the design of the controller, so it looks great on your shelf or coffee table while you charge it. The dock comes with a rechargeable battery pack, so you don’t need to anything else to charge up the controller.
