Fans are discussing a new God of War Laufey screenshot featuring fan-favorite hero Kratos, in a setting resembling Ancient Greece.

The image was revealed today via the PlayStation blog, alongside details of the game's preorder bonuses and digital deluxe edition. The screenshot shows Laufey's eponymous heroine with Kratos, with the pair standing in what looks to be a Greek temple.

Why is this interesting? Well, because Laufey is supposed to be dead and separated from Kratos, and she never visited Ancient Greece during his time there, which occured long before they met. So, what's going on?

Firstly, while Laufey is very much the star of this new game, fans have already seen Kratos pop up a couple of times at its beginning, in footage released back when the game was revealed in June. First, the bearded demigod can be seen burning Laufey's body on a funeral pyre, an event which took place at the start of the 2018 God of War game.

Laufey then re-awakens in the Everywhen — a heavenly place that serves as an afterlife for gods of all mythologies — and it's here that Kratos visits her again in a moment of need, albeit only momentarily. When this scene was shown earlier this year, however, it was not clear if Kratos would feature further in the game, or this was something of a one-off.

Today's screenshot answers that question, but then asks several more. Which version of Kratos is this? Is it the version that's still alive and living through the events of 2018's God of War and its sequel Ragnarök? If so, when exactly in his timeline does this take place? Alternatively, could this be a version of Kratos that has also found himself in the Everywhen via other means (perhaps after his eventual final death)?

And what about that Ancient Greek setting? Is this a corner of the Everywhen that Laufey will visit, themed around Greek mythology? Will other familiar faces from the first God of War trilogy make a reappearance here too?

"Where the hell are they?" God of War fan Iluminado_Horn wrote on video game forum ResetEra. "In Greece? After Ragnarok?"

"Laufey dreams/hallucinates of Kratos, it was shown on the gameplay reveal," responded another fan, Patitoloco. "This could be anywhere in the game, or a flashback."

Last, but certainly not least, this image has sparked praise for Kratos' exquisitely bushy beard, which has been rendered on PlayStation 5 Pro in fine detail. While this isn't our first time gazing at the game running on PS5 Pro, it is certainly impressive when you take a moment to appreciate it.

God of War Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 early next year, on February 16, 2027.
