For the second time, and likely the last, Magic: The Gathering has taken players back to Middle-Earth with its The Hobbit set (its fifth of the year, if you can believe it), and itās been pretty great.
Thatās perhaps to be expected since the original book laid out a lot of what we consider fantasy tropes. Dragons, goblins, dwarves, and more are represented here in a smaller set than the Lord of the Rings one, all of which have gone on to inspire Magic cards in their own right.
Still, given how tricky it can be to get some products, thereās a good chance that finding Hobbit items can feel like searching for the Arkenstone in Smaugās treasure hoard. And yet, it feels like, in a way, thatās kind of the point.
Tolkien Collectors Will Love The Hobbit Set
J.R.R. Tolkienās influence on the world of fantasy cannot be overstated, and thereās a reason that so many early editions of his works have fetched colossal sums of money.
As an example, back in 2025, a fully signed Lord of the Rings first-edition set sold for around Ā£287,700 (or $337,000). That marks the high point of spending, but itās not an outlier by any stretch.
An unsigned first edition of the book also sold in 2025 for $250,000, while a collection of manuscripts from the author that includes notes written in Elvish has sold for over $200,000, too.
Naturally, memorabilia sells big, too, notably from Peter Jacksonās iconic movies. Props, costumes, and limited-edition art prints fetch piles of gold to make a covetous dragon blush, and that includes pieces from The Hobbit movies, too.
Of course, those figures are colossal compared to the price of even the most expensive cards in The Hobbit set, but thereās crossover there, too.
Whereas the Lord of the Rings set offered full art cards with a slick border treatment that highlighted the seriesā characters across heroes and villains, The Hobbit leans into the seriesā literary origins with book cover-inspired designs that carry a āwell-readā look that makes them feel unique amongst Magicās wide-ranging treatment offerings.
This writer was lucky enough to pack Gandalf, Goblinsā Bane and Smaug, Wicked Worm in the treatment, and theyāve almost instantly become two of my favorite Magic cards I own. Thereās just something about the way they look textured that makes them feel like the latest in a long line of Tolkien memorabilia.
In fact, Iād go so far as to say that these are my favorite treatments weāve received in years - and an ideal inclusion for any serious collector.
That doesnāt make it any easier to find the cards, mindā¦
