Driving in a crowded town, with frequent stopping and starting as you wait for the hustle and bustle of daily life to fade, is, quite frankly, dull. I don’t mind blaring my music and singing out of tune to Zac Efron’s "Bet On It" as much as the next guy, but the reality is simple: Normal driving is boring. However, take away the road and head for the wilderness, and things get more interesting. That’s exactly what Over the Hill asks you to do.
While most of the “friendslop” games around right now (which I think is just a silly subgenre name for some of the best co-op games, but I digress) focus on horror experiences or absurd worlds, Over the Hill is fittingly distinct in its normality. You and your friends drive cars through a stylized wilderness, heading off the tarmac and into scenic landscapes while helping each other overcome the obstacles in your way.
Thunderstorms roll across the sky, bringing treacherous weather to your journey, before the storm clouds lift to reveal blue skies and a gentle sunset. Thick mud makes it difficult to get your car moving, but a handy winch lets your friends pull you out of the sludge and back on your way. Along the journey, you can also look for potential upgrades to make things a little easier before the next obstacle appears.
Even if you’re a fan of racing games and feel truly comfortable behind the wheel, Over the Hill offers a different way to experience driving. This isn’t about reaching your destination faster; it’s about the journey. And when that journey takes you past beautiful lakes at sunrise or through snow-covered mountains that become more accessible as you plow through the terrain, well, it’s a journey worth taking.
The game has only just launched, but if you’re looking to pick it up at a discount, you can grab it for just $15.74 / £14.17 at Fanatical. You’ll still get a Steam key for the game, so there’s no need to download any additional launchers. Just redeem it through your Steam account, hit install, and prepare for a scenic drive.
Of course, you might have friends who are just cruel and try to ruin the journey. Well, we’ve all got those kinds of friends, but at least it’ll still be fun.
