Pragmata has a bit of a storied development history. It was delayed indefinitely, went missing from multiple showcases, before coming to life once again and eventually being released this year. The reveal was bizarre, the idea looked strange, and yet Capcom continues on an unstoppable roll, making hit after hit, and Pragmata was—thankfully—one of them. With a unique twist on the third-person shooter genre and an interesting take on the ‘dad game’ subgenre, Pragmata is one of my 2026 favorites, and right now, it’s cheaper than ever.

In all honesty, I was always one of the Pragmata believers. Despite the utterly strange announcement trailer way back in 2020, it had something that drew me in. Years later, my hope for a new IP from Capcom wasn’t just ‘hopium’; it turned out to be faith, and I was right for believing in it. Pragmata, to put it shortly, is a banger.

You play as Hugh, an engineer sent with a support team to investigate why communications between Earth and a mining outpost called The Cradle have suddenly stopped. After being knocked out by a moonquake and waking up to a strange android in the form of a little girl, whom Hugh calls Diana, it turns out that the AI has gone rogue. And not in the ChatGPT kind of way (at least, not yet), but more like a Skynet-style situation.

Armed with a variety of guns that you’ll unlock throughout the game, Hugh’s weapons aren’t exactly a huge threat to the robots. In fact, they can sometimes feel like pea shooters. Fortunately, Diana has the ability to hack robots and make them vulnerable, so almost every battle becomes a game of strategy. Not only do you need to worry about being attacked, but you also have to complete a puzzle to hack enemies, with Pragmata dishing out more complex hacking routines as you continue.

While it may seem quite tedious and cumbersome at first, it quickly becomes Pragmata’s defining feature. Without the hacking and the gimmicks it offers, Pragmata would probably be a ‘very good, but not great’ third-person shooter, but the hacking mechanic and sci-fi world make it stand out from other entries in the genre, even Capcom’s own Resident Evil series. It’s also fairly easy to learn, so you don’t have to worry about being thrown into the deep end.

The isolated setting, near-future technology, and creepy robots patrolling each area make Pragmata feel like Dead Space, but without the fear factor of the best horror games. If you’re not looking to be scared, this is a great replacement that keeps the tension without having gross, deadly Necromorphs diving out of vents.

As a recently launched game, Pragmata isn’t exactly cheap, but you can grab a Steam key at its lowest price ever right now, with Fanatical dropping the game to just $40.19 / £33.49, a 33% discount off the listed price. That’s definitely worth it, and you’re getting a solid new experience for cheaper than Steam. Win-win, in my eyes.

If you’ve been waiting to play a new game on your PC, well, this is a pragmatic solution… Sorry, I’ll see myself out.
