Back in 2013, when I was a wee little lad (well, 13 years old) watching YouTube Let’s Players, I discovered The Last of Us. The opening hour was brutal, and I had to stop what I was doing and beg my grandfather to take me to trade in some of my older games, just so I could see how the rest of the story unfolded. It was one of the best memories and worst choices of my life, as The Last of Us threw me through an emotional loop that I have yet to recover from, and one that Part 2 just doubled down on. Now, the Part 1 and Part 2 remasters are cheaper than ever on PC, and well, you better get that box of antifungal tissues ready.

The Last of Us isn’t just one of the greatest PlayStation games; it’s now one of the best PC games too. Sure, maybe the gameplay isn’t some legendary, genre-defining experience, but the story is such an emotional rollercoaster, backed by excellent voice acting and some top-notch level design. It doesn’t just take the simple premise of the apocalypse and run with it, but finds plenty of unique ways to make its world feel distinct.

In the first game, you play as Joel, who, decades after the initial outbreak, is still grieving the loss of his daughter. However, he’s making do in the now zombie-ridden world by working as a smuggler, who inevitably gets tasked with taking a teenage girl called Ellie across the country safely, as she is supposedly immune to the infection and could lead to a cure. Nothing could go wrong here.

The Last of Us Part 2 takes place four years later, when Ellie is now an adult and has settled into life in a small town. Without spoiling anything, things quickly go bad, and Ellie leaves behind her quaint life in pursuit of vengeance. What unfolds is a narrative that rewires everything you thought was true in the first game, making for an experience that forces you to question your own morals.

Both of the PC versions on sale are the remastered takes on the games. The Last of Us Part 1 has improved visuals and enhanced combat, which was one of the weaker points of the original, while Part 2 Remastered gets a visual bump and an excellent roguelite mode that delivers more of the bombastic, violent, and overall brutal combat that the sequel nails.
