Zombies, and then gave it an art style similar to Cult of the Lamb, The Rabbit Haul is exactly what you’d get. This whimsical cozy game by day, tower defense and strategy gem by night, is a brilliant time-waster and an excellent indie that will test your abilities with each passing evening. If that sounds like your type of game, you can already get it at a pretty great price at launch.

Combining elements from some of the best indie games and making them work together is no easy feat. In fact, it’s a hopping difficult one, yet The Rabbit Haul makes it work. At the start, you find your town destroyed and in pieces, and, as the last farmer available, you need to venture into the wilds to plant crops, tend to them, and add them to your haul, watching as it balloons into a plentiful harvest. Sound easy? It is, until you add the threat of the raccoons.

As the sun sets, the trash pandas come out to steal all your hard work. Fortunately, you’re not left helpless, waiting for these little bandits to make off with your food. You can plant special crops during the day to defend your loot (that’s the tower-defense portion of the game), but you’re also armed with a variety of weapons, from magical wands to good ol’ handy swords. A bit overkill, mind you, but it’s the best way to deal with invading raccoons that make Rocket look tame.

Each night you survive rewards you with more currency and, hopefully, more crops that have sprung to life, allowing you to strengthen yourself as the stakes are slowly raised. As you plant carrots and strawberries, you’ll also be able to place multiple towers near each other, earning crystals that level you up and offer unique abilities that fans of the best roguelite games will recognize. Want spinning blades around you? Go ahead. Or perhaps you want to make your strawberries more valuable to sell? That’s possible, too.

Each successful (or even unsuccessful) run rewards you with currency that you can spend in town. Whether that means improving the lives of residents by rebuilding their homes or upgrading your weaponized crops to make harder runs more manageable, there are plenty of ways to spend your hard-earned cash. You’ll also find upgrades for each of your towers, some of which will absolutely blast through raccoons. Have fun with those.
