I trust AI about as far as I can throw itโ€”and I'm definitely not strong enough to lift up a data centre server rack. Flinging a facsimile of the OpenAI logo around VR is a little more realistic for my weight class, and now a software developer at Epic (no, not that one) has at least in part fulfilled that vision.

Earlier this week, Hank Berger shared a short clip of himself in VR, picking up the aforementioned model from his 3D software, and hurling it to his 3D printer, where it begins printing. Berger wrote, "I've never felt more like Tony Stark than I do now."

So, yes, it's more a project borne out of AI enthusiasm rather than sharing in my scepticism. The Bambu Lab printer API allows users to control the 3D printer locally, though Berger notes in a follow up post that "Unfortunately, it makes the mobile app stop working." So, the developer "spun up a quick webserver" on his PC, and then leveraged GPT-6 Astra to get his Meta Quest 3 headset, the mobile app, and his 3D printer to all 'talk' to each other.

He shared on X that the project is "not up on GitHub yet, but I might consider it if there's enough interest," explaining that it "needs a bit more polish to be distribution ready." Berger has also posted a number of his other AI-assisted experiments in recent weeks, including completely unofficial VR ports of Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros Melee.

As we've covered in the past, a number of independent developer communities have been picking apart retro games and meticulously putting them back together again so that they are playable on PC. This retro game decompilation scene has become the new AI vibe coding battleground, due to an influx of 'AI rush jobs' as our Wes describes them.

While Berger's VR-take on Super Smash Bros Melee is based on an 'AI accelerated' decompilation, his Luigi's Manson VR project isn't; he explains in a follow up post that "Astra can help you install an emulator and modify the ROM" to run Luigi's Mansion in VR. He also stresses "Decompiling is a very long and intensive task and will burn through your [AI subscription] usage!"

Personally, I would prefer to work out my own frustrations about the AI-induced memory crisis by donning my own VR headsetโ€”if I had any.
