I love The Blood of Dawnwalker. As someone who usually finds themselves sticking to the storyline and just driving through the main plot, I’ve found myself losing track of time (ironically) in the blood-drinking shoes of Coen. Vampires are awesome, and The Blood of Dawnwalker delivers these creatures of the night in a tantalizing RPG that, if anything, has changed my perspective on the genre. You play as Coen, who is wrapped up in a rebellion against the vampire ruler of their home, Brencis. Considering this is the opening of the game, you can probably imagine that things go wrong. Coen is turned into a vampire, his family is held hostage by the antagonist, and you have just 30 days to save them. And, to really amp up the stakes (pun intended), almost every quest, including main and side ones, takes up that precious time. No pressure.

That makes every single element of The Blood of Dawnwalker’s world feel equally important. Will you help this vampire huddled away in their shop uncover the truth behind their friends’ murder? Maybe, or maybe not. It’s entirely up to you, and that makes Coen’s story feel personal to you—the player—without making that importance feel like it’s being forced upon you. You decide what feels necessary to do.

Somehow, someway, this actually made me spend more time in the world rather than rush through it. Call it ironic, call it strange, and call it twisted, but that is the case. Despite the more pressing experience, that limit made me fall in love with the world, while the intense For Honor-style combat of directing your attacks and blocks made every fight feel as good as the last.
