PCPhew, American Truck Simulator's latest beta update will tow me back to the road when I inevitably roll it trying to take a turn at 80 mph
I'm happily trucking down the highway in American Truck Simulator. The radio's on, it's a while to my next mandatory break, and there's not too much traffic. Things are going we-OH NO, OH BALLS, THAT'S MY TURN! I'M JERKING THE WHEEL VIOLENTLY, I'M TURNING, I'VE FORGOTTEN TO BR. Right, now my truck needs to be turned the right way up. Usually, I'd need to be dragged all the way to the nearest service station, but thanks to a new feature SCS Software are starting to roll out to their truck sims, I
PCIdols Of Ash review - a terrific spelunking horror game that makes you choose between a rock and a giant centipede
When I think of Idols of Ash, I think of seven sounds, listed here in order of deepening dreadfulness. The first and nicest sound is the clink of my silvery grapple sinking its hook, interrupting the rush of air past my ears as I fall. That's the second, less nice sound. The third sound is a distant, tectonic groaning, disconsolate and wakeful: it could be the wind again, pushing through some unaccountably musical lungful of stone. Yeah, I'm sure that's all it is. The fourth sound is definit
PCA Storied Life: Tabitha review – a cosy yet pensive puzzler where the biggest challenge is getting someone else's story straight
It is, as I write this, one year to the day since I and two fellow, newly-orphaned siblings finished the process of auditing, packing, and clearing out our childhood home. The final task: enduring the fearsome rattling and suspect braking of our dad’s neglected Renault Megane, just long enough for it to sputter to someone mad enough to buy it off us. The irony, that this clanking full-stop on the end our bereavement’s lengthy administrative aspect could so feasibly kill me, was not l
PCSome cult classic retro Warhammer games are now on sale for Steam, including one cult classic that may be great for the Steam Deck
The Warhammer Classics Collection, a Steam Store event currently underway courtesy of Warhammer and SNEG, has brought with it a collection of beloved retro games to the PC store for the first time. This includes a particular cult classic which was devilishly hard to get working previously. Read more
PC"This is the most reasonable and wise thing to do": survival shooter Road to Vostok's dev plans to recharge a bit before tackling fixes and larger updates
Finnish survivashooter Road to Vostok has fared very well since wandering out of the early access gates last week, and its solo developer Antti Leinonen's now turning his thoughts towards how he'll build on that going forwards. However, he's keen not to rush into any fixes or work on overhauls/additions, instead taking some time to get back to 100% following what sounds like an intense push to this initial build. Read more
PCStop Killing Games throw weight behind California bill that would force companies to either keep games working independently after server shutdowns or issue refunds
Stop Killing Games, the campaign group seeking to prevent online games being rendered unplayable when publishers shut down their servers, have moved to support a Californian bill that in its current form would require studios to either update games with impending server shutterings to they keep working independently aftwards or provide full refunds. The movement also claim their UK efforts are "far from dead in the water", noting they were called in to advise the Department for Culture, Media &
PCThe Sunday Papers
Sundays are for remembering the glorious sunshine you enjoyed but half a week ago, while looking out at eleven degrees Celsius' worth of grey skies and drizzle. Did you know some people actually like rain? Imagine. The weather taste equivalent of forgoing a beautifully soft, Emperor-size memory foam mattress to sleep on a beach towel with some used needles poking out of it because "It’s more refreshing." The ruin of humanity. What was I.. yes, the Sunday Papers. Good words to read. There a
PCRoblox is introducing a subscription service that encourages more shady practices, is it? Sounds about right
I truly wonder when enough will be enough for Roblox Corporation. We all know how much money Roblox is raking in, and yet yesterday it was announced that a shiny new subscription service called Roblox Plus is on the way. This new subscription is effectively replacing Roblox Premium, which for varying monthly fees you'd get varying amounts of the in-game currency Robux. Except Roblox Plus sounds like a worse deal. PCThe Pines asks what would Alan Wake look like if it was about therapy, and I kind of want to know the answer
Therapy is not the cure all that many like to make it out to be, but that doesn't mean your favourite gruff fictional detective couldn't still do it. This is, sort of, what The Pines is about, a game that if you squint real hard could probably pass for Alan Wake. The vibes are certainly similar, especially with Alan Wake 2, given that The Pines sees its protagonist finding himself in a strange, wooded (sort of) town, but it's got enough of its own thing going on to pique my interest. PCWhile it plays its roguelike autobattling safe, Skull Horde does put a smile on my flaming skeleton head
Skull Horde, the dungeon-crawling, minion-raising autobattler from Bore Blasters devs 8BitSkull, is out today. I like, it, mostly – maybe not as much as Alice B (RPS in peace) appreciated its predecessor’s helicopter-mining, but then there’s enough meat on Skull Horde’s magic bones to distinguish it as more than just another Vampire Survivors reanimation. PCEsoteric Ebb review
When I tell people about Esoteric Ebb, I mostly say that I play an idiot, because there's something deeply comforting about being a waylaid government oaf. Sure, I've pledged allegiance to hierarchy and bureaucracy, but there's always the possibility of doing something naughty or exciting or even something unexpectedly brave. As an unassuming representative of the establishment, I dance on the knife's edge of plausible deniability and weaponised incompetency. Ultimately, though, there's always t
PCSwashbuckling co-op survivor Windrose sets sail into early access next week, which means it's time to battle Blackbeard and a big flower
Yo ho, me hearties. Windrose, the co-op pirate survival game which lured plenty of folks aboard its demo decks in the Steam Next Fest earlier this year, is set to launch into early access next week. Better start practicing those shanties and, er, preparing to stab a giant flower once you've fought weird plague creatures. Read more
PCRust 2 isn't in development, Facepunch boss confirms after suspicious Steam page sparks speculation
Facepunch founder Garry Newman has denied that a sequel to survival/naked bloke battle royale game Rust is currently in the works, after a Rust 2 Steam listing ignited online chatter along those lines. Read more
PCDune: Awakening is ditching PvP as a mandatory endgame experience, as over 80% of lifetime players didn't engage with it at all
Dune: Awakening is shifting away from its PvP endgame, following on from major changes made in its recent chapter three update. In addition, private server hosting is coming, which should provide additional longevity and community hubs for the game in the hands of dedicated players. Read more
PCSony Pictures' Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation is resurrected, with the directors of last year's Final Destination: Bloodlines at the helm
Serious talk of a Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation has been a thing for over a decade now, with Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached since 2014. But that iteration has seemingly gone nowhere as Sony Pictures has just closed a deal with two new directors half of Hollywood is currently chasing. Read more
PCDon't Starve is back for more darkly whimsical co-op survival in Don't Starve Elsewhere, and this time there's hills!
Klei Entertainment has unveiled a brand-new multiplayer instalment of its gloomily amusing survival series, Don't Starve. As revealed during the latest Triple-i Initiative Showcase, it's called Don't Starve Elsewhere and it promises adventure in a "strange and unforgiving new world filled with magic, monsters and mystery" as players take on their greatest opponent yet: hills. Convince a giant robotic head on a stick it's not human in Prove You're Human, the new game from 1000xResist developer
I wouldn't have thought it would be that hard to convince an AI that it's not human. Just ask 'Would you be stupid enough to create a language where 'Sanction' can mean both to forbid and approve something?'. If an AI would admit to that then the contrarian is welcome to join the human race. I would think it's even easier to convince an AI it's an AI if it is also a giant robotic head on a stick, but Prove You're Human, the new game from 1000xResist developer Sunset Visitor, suggests this might
PCBuild the city of your dreams, and your graphics card's nightmares, in hyper-shiny mayoral sim City Masterplan
Newly formed dev outfit 1:1 Studio have announced their first game, a glossy citybuilder that, appropriately, promises "true 1:1 scale" construction across enormous 24x24km maps. City Masterplan doesn’t have a release date, but it does have a Steam page that’s full of feelgood marketing bumf like "Say goodbye to rigid grid constraints" and sensual whispers of "realistic traffic simulation." Less titillating than all this talk of logistic networks and architectural asset libraries are
